Mego | DC Comics Superman 8in & 14in | Mego History

Nov 3, 2026

If you were a kid in the '70s, chances are you played with a Mego. By the '80s they had disappeared, but now Mego and the Man of Steel are flying back for collectors and a new generation. In this Out of the Box video, Turco covers Mego's history and compares three Superman figures in 8-inch and 14-inch sizes.

What's in the video

Mego was founded in 1954 by David Abrams to make toys for five-and-dime stores, the dollar stores of their day. The name came from David's youngest son, who used to say "Me go too." In 1971, his oldest son Marty Abrams, known as the father of action figures, steered the company toward 8-inch licensed dolls with interchangeable bodies and fabric costumes, which set a new industry standard. The lineup included the long-running World's Greatest Super Heroes series with Batman, Robin, Aquaman and Superman. Mego expanded into famous TV shows and movies until it filed for bankruptcy in 1982 and dissolved the following year, which made the originals valuable collectibles. In 2018, Mego reformed with a limited run of classic clothed dolls, including '70s recreations.
